It is rewarding seeing a children growing up, as a family photo session is part of the baby’s development and another step to fill that memory box. Family photos are so much fun. It is great pleasure meeting returning families with older children. We usually know each other from previous sessions, which makes it really hard to have a relaxed family session. If it is your first time to have me as your family photographer, that is also fine. I can easily make a connection with parents and children, and we finish our sessions in a great mood.

Plan your wardrobe

The most important part – Have your clothing chosen way in advance and make sure that your outfit choices are comfortable and attractive.  Think about what do your family photos would look like?  If you wish for something soft and elegant?  Chose neutral colors with soft, flowing fabrics, like creams, soft pastels, beige, light browns, tans, greys.

Want to showcase the funny side of your family?  Choose coordinating colors. Incorporate colours and patterns that fit well together.

Or mix them – choose a few neutral colour and add a few bright accents.

No logos, please. To keep the look timeless, try to avoid trendy clothing with words or logos.

If you have something in your mind, please just send it to me, I am happy to have a look. I know it can be overwhelming.

What time should I book the session for?

What time of day will suit your children the best, let me know when they have a nap. When do they eat? Best to plan a time for when the children won’t be tired or hungry.

You need to be well-rested and well-fed. Please bring some snacks and drink to the children, just in case. Please bring snacks that are quick and easy to eat and non-staining.

Prepare the kids

A week or two before the photo shoot, please tell the children that you’re going to come and take some photographs. Get your kids excited for the session and let them know how much fun it will be.

Make sure to leave plenty of time to get ready

Parents, especially moms are often rushing around before a photo shoot, making sure that their family is dressed up and ready to go. I always encourage mothers to have their hair and makeup professionally done. Leave plenty of time for showers, baths, dressing, and grooming. Always give yourself extra time.

You don’t want to arrive feeling rushed and flustered.

Ask the dads to be cheerful participants

Dads, please cheerfully participate. I know that many dads dread the photo session, but please understand how important capturing your family is. These images will be left as a legacy when your children are grown. These will be treasured forever.

Have fun with your family

Relax and play with the kids, tickle them, give a cuddle. Don’t be afraid to pick up your children and toss them in the air. Give your wife a sweet kiss on the check. Have fun. Laugh. Giggle. Joke.

Bring an activity that you enjoy doing together as a family.

My most successful family sessions have incorporated an activity that the family loves to do together. This gives you something to do with your hands and feet, engages the little ones, and brings an authentic smile to your face.

Not everyone has to be looking and smiling at the camera at the same time

The best photographs are often the ones where everyone is engaged or interacting with each other. It is great to have photos of everyone looking at the camera but I believe that not every picture needs to be like that and smiling at the same time, these are the photographs that you will cherish most because they depict your family connection and your love.

On the family photo session

Instead of worrying about your child’s posture or facial expressions, talk with your kids, swap jokes with them, play little games.

If things aren’t exactly going to plan, that’s ok. Sessions aren’t perfect.

If you know your children are more likely to behave well in response to a treat, then your professional family photo session might be a good time to use that to your advantage.

Hopefully, these little tips helping you prepare for our upcoming family photo session in Manchester. I cannot wait to meet and connect with your family.
