Cake smash session prep & prepare
Cake smash photography in Manchester, Cheshire and beyond
This post is part of a series written with the incredible Essex newborn photographer Helen Carpenter. You can read ‘Five best cake smash themes‘ over on her blog.
Capturing babies is an amazing experience therefore baby photography is so special. It’s been a year of changes, sleepless nights, and no doubt enough ups and downs to justify writing a book about it, but you are finally here! Your baby is now a year old and it’s time to celebrate! Being a cake smash photographer in Manchester is something amazing, letting me capture the milestones of your baby.
The session
Cake smash sessions will last approximately an hour. We will spend the first 15 minutes of the session playing, and getting to know each other. The baby needs some time to warm up – this is my secret to a happy cake smash photo session.
The Cake
I always ask the clients to provide the cake for their sessions. Just want to avoid to have any issue, just in case your baby has an allergy. If you bring your own cake, please do NOT BRING A COLD/REFRIGERATED cake. This is very important – babies do not want to touch cold/hard frosting. The best cover for the cake is buttercream, no fondant, please because of choking hazard. Please leave the cake out at room temperature overnight before your session. Some babies aren’t very interested in the cake, so I’ll hide some of their favourite snacks in it.
Timing
I highly recommend scheduling smash at baby’s best time of day – following a nap or first thing in the morning when the baby is happiest. If you schedule a cake smash photo session 3-4 weeks prior to your home birthday party I will have your images available before your celebration.
Outfits
I have plenty of smash outfits available for use in my studio, or you are welcome to bring your own. You may bring one outfit for photos without the cake, and then a second outfit for the smash. Remember we have a short window with a happy, tolerant baby, so I don’t recommend too many clothing changes! I also highly recommend a change of clothes for mom, who may also be covered in frosting at the end of the session.
Clean up
My favorite method is the splash tub! Babies love to take a warm bubble bath after their cake smash, and it makes for magical images. If you don’t choose the smash tub I have warm wet towels for happy cleanup so baby doesn’t leave covered in frosting!
